When Starbucks was first founded in 1971, customers would walk in and ask for coffee beans: no modifications or refreshers. The shop featured a menu with the “Starbucks language” customers are familiar with today, including drinks such as espressos and lattes. Short and tall are other terms associated with the Italian coffee bar concept, used to describe the size of the drink. However, not everyone has embraced the Starbucks language. “I refuse to use Starbucks sizing.

New York CNN —The catastrophic wildfires in Maui have destroyed homes, churches, businesses and key cultural sites on Hawaii’s second-largest island. Maui authorities have asked tourists to leave the island and strongly discouraged nonessential travel to Maui. That means $4 of every $5 the island generates comes directly or indirectly from tourism, according to the Maui Economic Development Board. In 2019, 3.1 million people visited Maui. But that figure plunged to 793,000 during the height of the pandemic in 2020, according to the Maui Economic Development Board.

Not everyone is convinced the US will avoid a recession
  + stars: | 2023-08-07 | by ( Krystal Hur | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +8 min
New York CNN —The case for no US recession is building, but some on Wall Street are cautioning against getting overconfident. That has raised hopes among investors that the United States could avoid a recession despite the Federal Reserve’s aggressive pace of interest rate hikes. Still, some investors are maintaining that the US economy could tip into a recession later this year. The index of leading economic indicators is just kind of at an extreme rating. One of the reasons for the rise in equity valuations in recent weeks was the pricing out of recession or economic weakness.

Advertisements for the films "Oppenheimer" and "Barbie" appear at AMC Theaters at The Grove on Thursday, July 20, 2023, in Los Angeles. Chris Pizzello/APThis summer, scorching heat waves are helping take the movie box office to new levels. Movie-theater air conditioning is generally silent, powerful and adapts quickly to temperature swings. Within 5 years of the introduction of air conditioning in movie theaters in the 1920s, Basile said, 3,000 movie theaters were forced to put it in just to keep up with the industry. “Before air conditioning existed in movie theaters, summer was considered the dead season.” Not anymore.

From webbedgiant/RedditThese claims against Taco Bell are not the first of its kind for Siragusa’s lawyers, James Kelly and Anthony Russo. Siragusa is seeking $5 million for customers who purchased Taco Bell menu items affected by false advertising practices. The lawsuit comes just as Taco Bell wrapped up its battle against Taco John’s for the “Taco Tuesday” trademark, in which the taco chain successfully petitioned for the phrase to be available for all. Taco Bell did not immediately respond to CNN’s request for comment.

But if you work in an office, chances are the temperatures indoors felt the exact opposite. When air conditioning became standard in buildings in the 1950s, offices started “overcooling,” explains Salvatore Basile, the author of “Cool: How Air Conditioning Changed Everything.” Building owners wanted to show that they offered the comfort of air conditioning, but sometimes they offered too much of it. “Air conditioning was a sexist technology. According to a 2015 paper by Kingma, temperatures in office buildings appear to be based on the heat needs of a 40-year-old, 154-pound man. “Start by raising the office temperature 5 degrees, and then give people the option to use fans, either at their desk or installed into the ceiling,” says Schavion.

CNN —Strong sales of leftover Yeezy inventory is helping Adidas recoup some of its losses. Recent sales of the shoes left over from the abandoned collaboration with Ye, the rapper formerly known as Kanye West, should reduce Adidas’ expected operating loss to $498.3 million, the company said in a statement on Monday. Adidas announced some of their Yeezy inventory was available for sale in a statement in May. In addition to the lower operating loss, the potential write-off for remaining Yeezy inventory decreased to $443 million. These sales only included some of Adidas’ Yeezy leftover inventory, and the company said in the statement this may be the first of many for the discontinued shoe.

Shein accused of RICO violations in new lawsuit
  + stars: | 2023-07-14 | by ( Ellie Stevens | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
CNN —Three graphic designers are suing Chinese fast-fashion giant Shein over what they allege is “egregious” copyright infringement and racketeering. In the lawsuit, which was filed in a California federal court Tuesday, the designers allege Shein produced and sold exact copies of their designs. Rather, there is a mysterious tech genius, Xu Yangtian aka Chris Xu,” the suit claims. According to their “About us” page, Shein says the company only produces 100 to 200 pieces of each model at launch. Those small quantities are intentional, the suit alleges: That way, before making more pieces, Shein can see if anyone complains about a stolen design.

CNN —Your Chipotle guacamole may soon be prepared by a robot. Meet “Autocado,” a Chipotle robot designed to perform the more tedious tasks of creating the chain’s guacamole, including cutting, coring and peeling avocados. But Chipotle (CMG) said this “collaborative robot” will not eliminate jobs, but, instead, employees will work with the robot to speed up guacamole production. For its design, Chipotle partnered with Vebu Labs, a robotics startup in California, to analyze the preparation process at various Chipotle restaurants and identify the most time-consuming tasks for employees. And Chipotle is already testing “Chippy,” a robotic kitchen assistant that uses artificial intelligence to make tortilla chips to dip in Autocado’s guacamole.
